Equities Tech Ops Engineer

The D. E. Shaw Group seeks a Tech Ops Engineer to join its Equities trading operation. The Equities group is an established profit center for the firm with a 20+ year track record. The Engineer will join a team that provides support for the real-time trading system, manages and improves operational infrastructure, and triages front-office technical issues. The role covers a wide range of responsibilities including software infrastructure development and maintenance, troubleshooting critical production issues, identifying and patching bugs and inefficiencies, building of monitoring and automation tools, communication with counterparties, design and documentation of operational procedures and reports, and coordination with other technology groups around releases and upgrades. The position involves heavy interaction with developers, quants, and traders and coordination with remote support staff. The role requires hours from 11 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and Sunday evenings from 5 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. when Asian markets open; additionally, this individual will cover occasional off-hours emergencies.


The ideal candidate will have at least 3 years of relevant experience in a DevOps, TechOps, or Site Reliability Engineering role, as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related discipline. He or she will be comfortable working in a UNIX environment including proficiency in UNIX shell scripting, Perl, and Python; possess strong software debugging abilities, excellent communication skills, careful attention to detail, a knack for prioritization, and the drive to identify the source of problems and pursue them to resolution. Prior financial markets knowledge is preferred but not required; basic understanding of probability and statistics is also beneficial.
